How to Measure for Your Blinds, Shades, and Shutters

Finding a window treatment that you love is a moment to celebrate. After endless research, you’ve finally found a style that you adore. The only downside is measuring them incorrectly and not loving how they look at the window. If you appreciate a good DIY project, learning how to measure for your blinds, shades, and shutters is key to ensuring your window treatments fit properly.

Decide the Type of Window Treatment Mount

Before measuring anything, first decide whether you want to mount your window treatment on the inside or outside of your window frame:

Your mounting preference lays the foundation for the parameters for your window treatments.

How to Measure for Blinds

For an inside window mount, measure the width of the window opening at the top, middle, and bottom. Use the narrowest measurement to ensure the blinds fit inside the frame. Next, measure the height on the left, center, and right sides of the window. Use the tallest number.

For blinds with outside mounts, measure the width of the area you want covered. Add extra width on each side to block light and create a balanced look. Measure the height from where you want the headrail to sit, all the way down to where the custom blinds should end.

What You Need to Know About Measuring for Shades

While shade measurements are similar to those for blinds, their operation depends on precise measurements and proper installation. Measure the top width, middle, and bottom of your window opening for inside mounts. Record the smallest number. Then, measure the height on the left, center, and right. Use the largest number.

For outside-mounted blinds, measure the full width and height of the area you want the shade to cover. Be sure to allow extra space beyond the window frame for your preferred levels of privacy and light control.

How to Measure for Shutters

Custom-built shutters require extra care when measuring for your window. Measure the width and height of your window’s opening at the three points mentioned for blinds and shades. Use the smallest width and the tallest height.

Interior shutters must fit precisely to open and close properly, which is why connecting with our professionals is helpful for this investment.
